Richard Najac, MD, FACS

Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon

Our lead board certified ophthalmic surgeon is Dr Richard Najac.  He  is a second generation ophthalmologist practicing in Queens, New York for over twenty five years.

Dr Najac graduated from Amherst College and Weill Cornell Medical College. After a medical internship at Yale affiliate, Danbury Hospital he did his residency and fellowship training at the prestigious New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Following his fellowship with Dr. Mark Speaker in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery he joined his father, Harold W. Najac, MD in private practice in Kew Gardens, New York.

Dr. Najac has devoted his practice to preserving the eyesight of patients with cornea, cataract and glaucoma diseases. As a cornea specialist he is exceptionally trained to operate on pterygia, corneal swelling and scarring and cataracts. Employing the most up to date techniques Dr Najac employs amniotic membrane to treat pterygia, partial corneal transplants (DSEK, DALK) to treat corneal disease and the femtosecond laser to perform laser assisted cataract surgery.

In addition to performing surgery Dr Najac is passionate about evaluating and treating dry eye disease.  As the first practice in Queens to utilize the Lipiflow system for treating Dry Eye Disease, Dr Najac remains on the cutting edge of this rapidly changing and increasingly important disease.

Dr. Najac has been a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Eye Bank of New York, most recently serving as the Secretary. The Eye Bank is a non-profit organization devoted to coordinating the supply of corneal tissue to physicians and patients to allow for corneal transplant surgery to restore vision. In addition he is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the New York State Ophthalmologic Society and the American College of Surgeons. He has surgical and admitting privileges at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and the Eye Institute.

Dr. Najac was the Director of Cornea and Refractive Services at the Jamaica Hospital System and has been actively and passionately engaged in resident teaching and training for the past twenty five years. Over the years he has had the privilege and honor of training some the finest ophthalmologists in both Manhattan and Queens.
